Description

On May 2, 1943 the military changed the specs for the spoon & fork from tin to silver plate & on August 2, 1944 changed it again to corrosive resistant steel (source: history.army.mil - URL: https://history.army.mil/html/museums/messkits/Field_Mess_Gear.pdf ). I had several WWII military utensils in my time & I never came across one made of tin, nor can I find any online. I would venture to guess that is because they converted to stainless / corrosive resistant steel rather quickly & tin/steel ones such as this one were likely recycled for the war effort. I tried to confirm this hypothesis but couldn't quite nail it down except for the information above, which implies this may be the case. This spoon has a lot of surface rust but is otherwise solid.
