Description

Typed & Signed Woodrow Wilson Letter on White House Stationary with Original Envelope This seemingly heart-felt note from President Wilson is dated a week after his election in 1912, but the envelope with White House posting is dated 1914. It is possible that the note was first posted after inauguration, in 1913, but not deliverable until the new address from the 1913 move became known. The letter was one of three signed by Wilson found among the Estate of Dr Macauley's grandson & namesake, Colonel Hugh B. MacCauley (1922-2003) Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) was the 28th President of the United States, for two terms including WWI, after having served as the 13th President of Princeton & the 34th Governor of New Jersey. "He was also deeply influenced by the Presbyterianism of his father, a minister & sometime college teacher" (wilsoncenter.org) It's not surprising then that Wilson would know the prominent Dr. Hugh B MacCauley (1855-1925) who, at the time of Wilson's election in 1912, was a Presbyterian minister in Trenton New Jersey where Wilson resided, as Governor of the state. Dr MacCauley moved from Trenton to Patterson NJ in 1913 (Herald on Presbyr, p13). Dr MacCauley also acted on behalf of other Democrats (eg.1922 - Senate Cases p 194 Ford v Newberry) From the Estate of Col. Hugh B MacCauley & Felice Cooper MacCauley: Hugh Bourbonville MacCauley was born in New Jersey in 1922 & he was a New Jersey resident until he joined the Air Force during WWII. He also served during the Korean & Vietnam Wars before retiring as a colonel. Subsequent careers were as a stockbroker in San Bernardino & founding chairman of The Desert Community Bank in Victorville, he was a longtime member of The Victoria Club in Riverside. He was on the initial Board of Directors of Air Force Village West, a military retirement facility in Riverside. He was the founding chairman of The General & Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, a non-profit organization aiding widows of military personnel. Col MacCauley died July 22, 2003 in Orange, California & he was interred at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. This item was curated from his Estate in 2022 when his wife, Felice Cooper MacCauley, moved to an assisted living facility at age 94.
