Jane Wells Loudon (b1807 - d1858) a writer on botanical, horticultural & natural science subjects & a magazine editor active in the 19th century. in 1844 Jane received an award from the Royal Literary Fund. She received a civil list pension of £100 in 1846. Chief among her publications at this stage were her British Wild Flowers (1845), Amateur Gardener's Calendar (1847), the Lady's Country Companion at Home & Abroad (which she edited between 1849 & 1851), The Ladies' Flower-Garden of Ornamental Greenhouse Plants (1848), Tales About Plants (1853) & My Own Garden, Or, The Young Gardener's Year Book (1855). "In her introduction to this work, Mrs. Loudon (1807-1858) stated her goal to be to create a work that would be useful to ladies interested in flowers & would encourage the study of botany "which has hitherto been too much neglected... I shall take only the most ornamental plants, & I shall not figure any flowers that are common in gardens. My object is to enable any amateur who may find a pretty flower growing in the wild to ascertain its name & some particulars respecting it."
