Description

Large bright sampler, Latin American, likely Mexico or Guatemala, in wool yarn over loosely woven white backing, dated 1890, alphabets, numbers, multiple images, very densely embroidered. Measures 22 1/4" x 16 3/4" x 3/4" framed, fabric is roughly 15" x 20 1/4". Sampler is behind glass in a gilded wood frame, & is backed with a teal colored board, framing appears to be modern. The entire surface of the sampler is covered in design, with multiple examples of the alphabet, geometric bands, Greek key designs, flowers, vines, figures including dogs, birds, cat(?), duck, as well as a house, crown, flower pots, keys, arrows & crosses, all in varying colors of red, pink, green, creamy yellow, & off white. The background fabric is white. Signed by Matylde Barrutia, 1890, her name appearing twice. Cross stitched yarn is typical of samplers from Mexico & Central America, & the colors are typically strong, & in this case are the colors of the Mexican flag. Condition: Frame shows loss to gilding, & sampler has wear & loss to fabric, visible in close up photos. As the fabric is thin & loosely woven, such wear would be expected. The yarn stitching is in very good condition, very little wear & good color. No stains visible. Due to antique age & minor losses, is sold as is. NOTE: some reflection on glass showing as white spots, & the color of the fabric is white, appears grey in photos due to lighting. Very large & fine example of Latin American samplers, ready to hang & enjoy. See our other listings for another similar sampler. Please see all images for details & email any questions. Shipping via USPS or Fedex with tracking & insurance. Shipping delays may occur. Mexican Or Central American Sampler, Cross Stitch Yarn On Woven Fabric, 1890
