Description

Echinocereus coccineus ssp. paucispinus, Amistad N.R.A., Tx, 20 seeds (Claret cup cactus) Skill Level: Germination: beginner Growing: intermediate Habitat: Chihuahuan Desert scrub, bajadas, pinyon-juniper & oak woodlands, mountain forests. It grows on rocky outcroppings & cliffs, in loamy, humusy, mineral soil, but also in igneous, metamorphic, & limestone substrates. This red-flowered species forms clumps with dozens or hundreds of stems. Claret cup needs very good drainage, so use a very loose, soil mix, keeping the organic components to no more than 25% of the total. It requires more moisture during the growing season but allow the soil to dry between waterings. Keep dry in winter. Full sun exposure is necessary for good spine development & flowering. Cold tolerance is as low as -15oF. Germination of cactus seeds is about timing, temperature, quality of seeds, & establishing a technique for sowing, Some species have a higher germination rate, & / or lower germination time than others. For that reason I can't guarantee a specific success rate. If you are having trouble getting any of your seeds to germinate, please let me know.
