Rosetta Stone, ancient Egyptian stone bearing inscriptions in several languages & scripts; their decipherment led to the understanding of hieroglyphic writing. An irregularly shaped stone of black granite 3 feet 9 inches long & 2 feet 4.5 inches wide, & broken in antiquity, it was found near the town of Rosetta, about 35 miles northeast of Alexandria. It was discovered by a Frenchman named Bouchard or Boussard in August 1799. After the French surrender of Egypt in 1801, it passed into British hands & is now in the British Museum in London. Our small replica was made in Cairo, Egypt! There is a felt backing to protect your surfaces. It is just three inches tall. This Rosetta Stone paperweight is cast in polymer & poly-bagged with hole-punched header. The Rosetta Stone, discovered in the late 1800's, provided the key to deciphering ancient Hieroglyphics. The giant stone had the same thing carved in 3 different languages, giving archeologists their first real understanding of the ancient writing system.
