Here is a beautiful vintage Autumn/Fall landscape Plein Air landscape painting by listed Canadian artist Lila Caroline McGillivray Knowles (1886 - 1979). The painting is oil on canvasboard & is framed in its original carved wood frame. The painting depicts a flaming red/orange tree with distant trees in gold foliage. The painting is signed by Lila C. Knowles. It measures 16 x 20 in. framed & unframed about 12 x 16 in. The painting is in very good vintage condition with only a tiny chip of paint off one leaf at the top left. The frame is in fair condition with chips/paint loss on the surround. It is a muted gold color & is original & stable still. The back paper is tattered & torn & will probably rip even more. If that bothers you, you can add a new piece of paper to the back. A painter & educator, Lila Caroline (nee Taylor) McGillivray Knowles (Mrs. Farquhar McGillivray Strachan Stewart Knowles) was born in Granton, Ontario, studied in Toronto, Ontario, & afterward lived, for most of her life, in St. Thomas, Ontario where she died. Her mediums were oil, watercolor, gouache, & pencil. Her subjects were landscapes, flowers, & coastal scenes. The locations included Ontario, Nova Scotia, & Cape Cod. Her styles were Realism, Plein Air, & Impressionism. I would date this to the 1940s to early 1950s time period. Perfect for Traditional, Country, Farmhouse, Arts & Crafts, & Eclectic decors.
