Seungmu is the most famous Korean traditional dance. It was designated South Korea's "Important Intangible Cultural Treasure No. 27", in 1969. It is performed by a professional dancer(s) dressed as a Buddhist monk, in full regalia. Seungmu is commonly referred to as "dance of the monk", however, it is neither a dance formally associated with Buddhist ritual, nor was it ever danced by monks. This highly sophisticated dance with a complex rhythmic structure & intricate choreographic designs gives intense expressions to life's joys & sorrows.
