Born into a middle-class, German-speaking family in Prague, Kafka never earned a living through his writing & held a job at an insurance company until succumbing to tuberculosis at the age of 40. He famously ordered his friend & literary executor, Max Brod, to destroy the unpublished manuscripts of his novels The Trial', 'The Castle', & 'Amerika', which his friend thankfully ignored. His novels & short stories like 'The Metamorphosis' have survived to become some of the most popular literary works of the 20th century.
