A devout Muslim from Dakar, Mariama was the daughter of a State minister who insisted on her receiving a collegiate education (unusual for women in Senegal at the time.) She trained to become a teacher, a profession she undertook for many years, ultimately joining the regional government as an educational inspector. Her powerhouse 1979 epistolary novel, 'So Long a Letter,' about the female condition in her traditional society, proved a watershed moment for both African letters & women in Senegal.
