Description

This is a handmade, wheel thrown miniature ceramic jug, fired & salt-glazed in the tradition of the Ohio valley, Pennsylvania & Great Smokies crocks & jugs you find in antique stores up & down the east coast. It is made with a high temperature white, stoneware clay, thrown on the potter's wheel just like the big pots were. Then it is bisque-fired & and a dark brown liner glaze is applied to the inside. Then it is loaded in the gas kiln in historic Wheaton Arts in Millville NJ. When the firing reaches a peak temperature, salt is thrown into the kiln chamber which reacts with the clay to yield the characteristic, much desired "orange peel" texture to the surface of each pot, giving them a weathered, antique feel. On the bottom of each pot are marks left by balls of clay wadding used to lift the pot off the shelf to prevent it from melting onto the kiln shelf-these marks guarantee you are purchasing a genuine salt glazed piece of pottery. No two pots are ever the same patina. Each of my pots is signed with a bird foot stamp, reflecting the time a bird ran across my pottery as it dried in the sun, hence the name: Tiny Wren Pottery. Miniatures were often made by potters at the end of the working day to use up scraps of clay & to sell as novelties. Antique miniatures are much sought after in today's antique markets. This crock measures approx 3" high including the wire handle & 1 3/4" wide at the base & features a tiny wire handle with a traditional brown liner glaze inside. You just can't get a miniature more authentic that this. I hope you will enjoy these pots as much as I enjoy making them!
