Vintage Karlsruhe West German Modernist Majolica Horse Plaque My photos are part of my description - please view them all & read the entire description prior to purchase. Props are not included. What an absolutely gorgeous piece of Art Pottery this is, made by a Karlsruhe artisan in West Germany. This hanging wall plaque features three carved running horses in a mosaic design that is the perfect example of Majolica in the modernist style. The colors on these horses include rich turquoise, deep sapphire, parmesan yellow & dark chocolate brown. The background is gray with just a hint of teal blue. The natural color of the foundational stoneware has been allowed to come through to 'outline' the horses & the intricacies of their mosaic paneling & it is all finished in a high-gloss glaze. This is a beautiful & finely-wrought piece of Art Pottery. There is a maker's mark on the back (see photo #10) which identifies this as Karlsruhe pottery. "Majolika-Manufaktur was set up at Karlsruhe in south-west Germany in 1901 in a pottery built by Grand Duke Friedrich I. The raison d'etre for the pottery was the desire of two German pictorial artists, Wilhelm Süs & Hans Thoma, to produce ceramics in the Italian Renaissance style...Its full name is Majolika Manufaktur Karlsruhe." This lovely plaque is made of a solid & heavy piece of thick red clay stoneware. It weighs a whopping 3 pounds & 11 ounces As you can see, the front visual of this item is very good - but there are some chips to the outer edges of this piece (see photos #6,7,8) & another chip on the back (see photo #9). This wall plaque would still make an exceptional piece of Art Pottery to display on your walls as a fine collectible.
