Description

This elegant late 19th century Towle sterling silver serving spoon has been made in the form of a sugar shovel & has a large deep rectangular scoop-form bowl finished in gilt wash. The top of the Hanoverian style handle features ornate bright cut decoration consisting of scrolling leaves bearing small round floriform shapes. The terminal bears the hand engraved letter "W". The bowl itself has a modified rat tail motif & carries large engraved symmetrical foliate scrolls that reveal the silver color beneath the gold wash. The serving piece is in excellent condition showing little-to-no sign of use. The warm golden gilt wash finish on the bowl is even on both the front & the back sides. The back of the handle is clearly hallmarked with the Towle Lion T mark along with the words "STERLING" & "PAT. 1889". It also carries a mark for high end Louisville Kentucky based jeweler/retailer Matthew Irion & JB Girardet. The serving spoon measures 7.125" in length. The rectangular bowl is 2.75" by 1.75" & is .75" at its deepest point. The piece weighs in at 46 grams. This antique Towle sterling sugar shovel scoop would be a wonderful addition to a collection of Victorian era bright cut silver or works equally well mixed & matched with other fine sterling serving pieces. It is ideal for both display & use at the table. An unusual piece from an esteemed maker.
