Description

the Burning of the Gaspee June 9, 1772 Warwick, RI the Burning of the Gaspee is from an original watercolor painting on a nautical chart by William B. MacGregor Jr., who is known in the New England area as the Junkyard Artist. in 1772, a British (customs schooner) naval vessel, Gaspee, under command of Lt. William Dudingston was assigned to patrol Rhode Island trade & stop the import of smuggled goods. Commander Dudingston regularly overstepped the law, stopping ships without cause, delaying their passage, looting goods, & inflicting bodily harm upon the colonial sailors. By June 9th, 1772, Rhode Islanders were tired of Dudingston's harassment & Captain Benjamin Lindsey (the Hannah) provoked Dudingston into shallow waters at Namquid Point (Gaspee Point), where it stranded on a sandbar. Then Captain Benjamin Lindsey devised a plan to destroy Gaspee. Under cover of darkness a raiding party of 80 men purpose was to arrest Dudingston but during the raid someone shot Dudingston. The raiders boarded the Gaspee, captured the crew & captain & torched the Gaspee. When her gunpowder ignited the Gaspee blew into smithereens. A spirit of solidarity grew in Rhode Island & spread throughout the colonies. Because King George decreed the Gaspee raiders be tried in England instead of in the colonies it got the attention of Sam Adams, in Boston. This motivated the colonial leaders to create the formation of Committees of Correspondence. The Gaspee Affair was one of the earliest acts of rebellion in the colonies & was a catalyst for the revolution. Rhode Island would become the first colony to declare its independence on May 4th, 1776; the national Declaration of Independence was signed two months later. The Burning of the Gaspee, Warwick RI.
