Heljä Liukko-Sundström (simply HLS) is/was one of the best-known artists at Arabia, as she worked about five decades for Arabia Finland. HLS is a multi-talent person: except these fine naïve pictures she has authored books for children. For Iittala glass-works she has also designed paperweights. Some decades ago, this view - swamp - was common in Finland, because Finland is a land of thousands of lakes. A shoal lake can develop to swamp as the plants grow & fill it. During tens of thousands of years, it has happened a lot. in the middle of the 21th century politicians decided to dry swamps. There were two economic reasons: more area for forests & fields, in addition they dug up peat (turve in Finnish). As peat was dried it could be used instead of coal to produce energy & heat. About four decades later they found out that burning peat was very harmful for climate. VAPO was/is a Finnish national energy office. in 1990, when this picture was ordered, dispute of swamps was not yet a common task. If it was, I am sure that Heljä Liukkonen had refused to make this work for VAPO. Nowadays swamps are not common in Finland, so it is nice to get a chance looking that view of my youth. To make it clear: I am not sure if this tile has any official name. Suo (swamp in English) would be a natural name for it. This tile was produced only 500 pieces (backside). Measurements: Thickness 5 mm Sides 205 mm x 250 mm Weight 700 g I have two of them. The price is for one tile. #1 Suo (2.-7. pictures) is in almost excellent condition. Few very tiny & slight scratches may be found. The hanger is included #2 Suo is in perfect condition with no marks of usage on the front side. Naturally on the back side appear some marks of hanger.
