"A healthy woman is much like a wolf: robust, chock-full, strong life force, life-giving, territorially aware, inventive, loyal, roving." Clarissa Pinkola Estés, 'Women Who Run With The Wolves'. Healthy wolves & healthy women share certain psychic characteristics: keen sensing, playful spirit, & heightened capacity for devotion. Wolves & women are relational by nature, inquiring, possessed of great endurance & strength. They are deeply intuitive, intensely concerned with their young, their mates, & their pack. They are experienced in adapting constantly to changing circumstances; they are fiercely stalwart & very brave. Yet both have been hounded, harassed, & falsely imputed to be devouring & devious, overly aggressive, of less value than those who are their detractors. They have been targets of those who would clean up the wilds as well as the wildish environs of the psyche, extincting the instinctual, & leaving no trace behind. The predation of wolves & women by those who misunderstand them in strikingly similar." - Clarissa Pinkola Estes This painting is an homage to my soul's spirit totem & curendera, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, whose beautiful & seminal work gave me, & millions of other women, validation & hope in our own wild natures. With every word, we recognized ourselves. Her words made us remember, & long for who & what we were beyond all that was expected of us, or taught though social expectations & mores. For so long, we repressed this shadow aspect of our selves, dutifully trying to shrink our wildness away. Now, we find ourselves longing for it, to learn all that we can about it, embrace it, & strive to align more with it (which increases our own health, & also the health of the planet). As women, we have had to come together & form our own mythos, both as tribe & singularly, & for many of us, the wolf represents that wild within. I have depicted this ideology in the fashion of how that feels to me, when we align ourselves to our wolf nature. Where we depend upon & love that which is wild within. There is both respect & mutual love, without overpowering the other. There is space enough on the canvas, & in this world, for both. I find it incredibly synchronous that the world has even come to see the wolf differently. For decades, they were seen as a blight, & rewards given for their pelts. in Colorado, where I live, legislation was just passed in the 2020 election to restore the wolves back to the wilderness, as it has long been proven how necessary they are for the great ecological chain of being. I think that a beautiful synchronicity, & not at all mere coincidence. Wolves & women are
