SUPER RARE 1800s 3D high relief bronze oval plaque, featuring Jesus descending from the cross. The artist signed JM. You won't find this religious plaquette anywhere else. SUPER RARE NOTE: It also reads Justin but very hard to see Size: 4" x 3" x 1/8" thick History Nugget: Mathieu, Justin, born 1796 - died 1864 (sculptor) This artist worked in plaster, pewter, & bronze, & is known for his highly detailed, realistic reliefs of a historically important scene. The sculptor Justin Mathieu specialized in reliefs of historical & religious subjects, many shown in the Paris Salons between 1846 & 1864. The popularity of scenes such as episodes from the life of St. Louis (1215-1270) reflects both the enthusiasm of the French from about 1830 for their national past & the romantic taste for the medieval subject matter.
