This highly collectible WWII United States Army Air Forces Survival Manual No. 21W was issued with the Jungle Emergency Parachute Back Pad & later the C-1 Survival Vest. The manual was "Prepared by / ARCTIC, DESERT & TROPIC / BRANCH / Army Air Forces Tactical Center, / Orlando, Florida". The inside cover of the 77 page booklet addresses the soldier in distress & states: "YOU HAVE EVERY CHANCE TO COME THROUGH SAFELY". It goes on to detail instructions for survival in a variety of conditions on land & at sea. The manual also includes multiple informative illustrations intended to provide further assistance to servicemen finding themselves in inhospitable and/or hostile situations. The first part of the manual addresses those who find themselves "ON LAND / Jungle - Desert - Arctic". It is divided into sections including: "Immediate Action / First Aid / Signaling / Decision (to stay or travel) / Shelter / Firemaking / Clothing / Health & Hazards / Water / Food / Travel / [and] Natives". The second part is intended for those who find themselves in the water & is titled "AT SEA". It is divided into sections including: "Immediate Action / Health at Sea / Water & Food / [and] Seamanship". There are three blank pages at the back labeled "LOG" at the top. The back of the manual bears the words: "Published by / TRAINING AIDS DIVISION / OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT CHIEF OF AIR STAFF, TRAINING / HEADQUARTERS ARMY AIR FORCES / One Park Avenue, New York City 16" along with: "James Gray Inc., New York, N.Y. 5-45 100M" The staple bound manual shows expected signs of age including toning/tears/folds/stains to the front & back cover & a .5" horizontal tear to pages 2-3. There are minor folds at bottom corner of the first three & last three pages mentioned for accuracy. The staples are rusty with associated staining while the back cover also has a doodle of a tree. There is no other writing present outside or inside. The cover is not attached at the top staple but is attached with associated tears at the bottom staple. The manual measures 8" by 3.75". This hard to find military manual would be a wonderful addition to a collection of genuine WWII materials, particularly if one owns a USAAF Jungle Emergency Parachute Back-Pad or Survival Vest.
