Celebrate the Century - 1960's This set in the Celebrate the Century series, prepared for the Millennium celebration, honors people & events prominent in the decade 1960-1969 of the 20th century. There were 10 sheets in this series, one for each decade, with 15 stamps on each sheet for a total of 150 different stamps. Each stamp only appeared once on each sheet. The Barbie Doll was "born" March 9, 1959, & sold 350,000 units its first year of production. Mattel, Inc., which owns rights to the doll, reports that more than a billion dolls have been sold since. Idea for the doll came from Ruth Handler, whose husband Elliott was co-founder of Mattel. She presented the idea for such a doll to him & both he & the firm's directors were less than enthusiastic. Mrs. Handler returned from a European trip with an example of what she perceived for Mattel, & Barbie was born. Mattel purchased rights to the other doll in 1964.
