Texas A&M Maritime Academy TS General Rudder Galveston, Texas Training ship TS General Rudder is from an original watercolor painting on a nautical chart by William B. MacGregor Jr., who is known in the New England area as the Junkyard Artist. The Texas A&M Maritime Academy (TMA) is one of seven maritime academies that train U.S. Merchant Marine officers & the only one located on the Gulf of Mexico. Texas A&M Maritime Academy was founded on January 26,1962 & General Earl Rudder was the college's first president. The Academy trains cadets to maintain & operate unlimited-tonnage ocean-going vessels. Students sail aboard the TMA training ship & commercial ships during to gain practical experience in navigation, seamanship & engineering operations. in March of 1996, the academy acquired the luxury liner USS Queens, & in June after a refit became the academy's first training ship named USTS Texas Clipper. in 1992, the ex-Contender a Stalwart-class ship became the T/V Kings Pointer, the training vessel for the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York. (Stalwart-class ships were originally designed to collect underwater acoustical data in support of Cold War antisubmarine warfare operations in the 1980s.) January 2012. She was then transferred to Texas A&M University at Galveston & renamed the "TS General Rudder" (after General James Earl Rudder), where she remains today as the primary training vessel for cadets of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy. in 2013, the vessel had another major overhaul, with the aft fantail's bulwark lowered, aft main deck leveled, & hull cleaned & repainted.
