Specimen Size: 84mm x 36mm x 17mm or 3 5/16 x 1 7/16 x 11/16 Inches; Weight 375ct or 75g or 2.6oz; Staurolite is a mineral that is commonly found in metamorphic rocks such as schist & gneiss. It forms when shale is strongly altered by regional metamorphism. It is often found in association with almandine garnet, muscovite, & kyanite - minerals that form under similar temperature & pressure conditions. Staurolite is usually easy to identify when it occurs as visible grains in a metamorphic rock. Grains of staurolite are typically larger than the grains of other minerals in the rock, & they often exhibit an obvious crystal structure. The name "staurolite" is from the Greek word "stauros," which means "cross." The mineral commonly occurs as twinned, six-sided crystals that sometimes intersect at 90 degrees to form a cross. (An intersection angle of 60 degrees is more common.) in some localities these twinned crystals are collected, made into jewelry, & sold under the name "fairy crosses." They are also known as fairy stones or as the fairy cross because they embody an energy that will help you to make contact with beings from the natural world. They have a soothing calming energy that helps to relieve stress, anxiety & fear.
