A nice early oil painting done by listed California & New York artist Frank William Cuprien (1871-1948). He is well known for his beautiful landscape & seascape paintings from in & around the Laguna Beach area where he resided most of his life. After studying in Europe Frank Cuprien taught for 5 years in the early 1910's at Baylor University in Waco, Texas & then moved to Laguna Beach CA for several decades. This oil painting is done an old canvas covered Masonite board & features a scenic view of two masted sail boats in the harbor with a shoreline seen in the distance with tall buildings. The paining appears to be an evening view with the moon reflecting off of the water which illuminates the boats & waves nicely. This painting is signed FW Cuprien in the lower right corner. The artwork itself measures 12" wide by 10" tall. The frame is 17" wide by 14,5" tall. The piece appears to have been reframed in the 1960's though the artwork likely dates to the 1920's era. The gold & black frame shows some wear & various scuffs, rubs from long term use & storage. The painting surface looks very nice & original with maybe one pin point dot size scuff evident upon close examination The painting itself looks very nice with fine detail in the water waves & darkening evening sky. The painting could use a good cleaning as it shows some soiling from many years of hanging in a smoke free home. The back of the painting has the old original price of $30 in pencil & a previous owners inscription of 'Timmy' as an intended recipient of this art work. A 13 sticker is seen in the lower right corner. A great California coastal view by this well known listed California artist. Sold as found.
