The 13th century Abu Simbel rock temples were built to commemorate victory in the Battle of Kadesh & as a lasting monument to Pharaoh Ramesses II (Ramses the Great; circa 1302 BC-1213 BC) & Queen Nefertari (Nefertari Meritmut; d. 1255 BC), located at Abu Simbel village in the Aswan region of Egypt, near the border with Sudan; due to the building of the Aswan High Dam on the River Nile & creation of Lake Nasser, the temples were relocated in 1968.
