This is a vintage 1968 metal kaleidoscope made in England as a promotion for the BBC TV Series 'The Magic Roundabout.' The kaleidoscope is metal & plastic with delightful colors & graphics! The Kaleidoscope works well with delightful colors & shapes appearing & changing as you rotate the end. The outside is decorated with characters from the show in a rainbow of colors. It is wonderful piece of nostalgia & the perfect addition to a toy collection or for a fan of the show, BBC TV & any anglophile. The Magic Roundabout (called Le Manège enchanté in France), was a children's television program that was created in France in 1964 by Serge Danot. The French series was first broadcast from 1964 to 1974 on ORTF (Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française). The BBC produced a version of the series using the French footage with new English-language scripts written & narrated by Eric Thompson. This version, broadcast in 441 five-minute-long episodes from 18 October 1965 to 25 January 1977, was a great success & attained cult status. There are many characters including Dougal the Dog & Brian the Snail who appear in the show. Some of these characters are depicted on the Kaleidoscope. The Kaleidoscope is approximately 9" long & 2" in dia. The end is red plastic. This is an estate sale find in good vintage condition. The viewfinder end has some rust & patina from age & there are some scratches & small dents in the tube. Please see picture for condition. There is a short video where you can see the interior of the scope with the changing shapes & colors. I have lots of fun items at EclecticTrashPanda.
