This beautiful metapodial comes from an extinct armadillo Dasypus bellus. This armadillo is called the Beautiful Armadillo. It lived during the Pleistocene approximately 2.5 million - 11, 000 years ago. It is related to the modern nine-banded armadillo but was about twice the size. The body of the Beautiful Armadillo was covered in thousands of scutes used for defense.
