Celebrate the Century - 1950's This set in the Celebrate the Century series, prepared for the Millennium celebration, honors people & events prominent in the decade 1950-1959 of the 20th century. There were 10 sheets in this series, one for each decade, with 15 stamps on each sheet for a total of 150 different stamps. Each stamp only appeared once on each sheet. Rocky Marciano, undefeated boxer Rocky Marciano reigned as heavyweight boxing champion of the world from 1952-1956 & retired without ever losing a fight. Marciano played both baseball & football until dropping out of school after completing the 10th grade. He worked on a delivery truck, digging ditches, & as a shoemaker before being drafted into the Army in 1943. Following World War II, & before being discharged from the service, Marciano won the 1946 amateur armed forces boxing tournament. He began fighting professionally in 1948. He defeated Jersey Joe Walcott in 1952 to become heavyweight champion. Marciano died in a private plane crash in 1969. Various methods of getting the movie's sound to the vehicles were employed over the years, from large speakers to individual speakers attached to the side window of each attending vehicle to low-power FM broadcasts for pickup on a vehicle's internal radio receiver. Primarily popular in rural areas, at one point the nation had some 4,000 such theatres. Mix & Match values to make the current rate.
