Description

the original Point Loma Lighthouse San Diego, California The original Point Loma Lighthouse is from an original watercolor painting on a nautical chart by William B. MacGregor Jr., who is known in the New England area as the Junkyard Artist. The original Point Loma Lighthouse is an historic lighthouse located on the Point Loma peninsula at the mouth of San Diego Bay, CA. The light is sometimes erroneously called the Old Spanish Lighthouse. It was built in 1855 after California became a state. in clear weather the light was visible at sea for 25 miles & welcomed sailors to San Diego Harbor. But the light's location on top of the 400-foot cliff meant that fog & low clouds often obscured the beam. On foggy nights the lighthouse keeper would sometimes discharge a shotgun to warn ships. On March 23, 1891, the Old Point Loma lighthouse was replaced by New Point Loma Lighthouse was built 100 yards south at a lower elevation. The Old Point Loma lighthouse was abandoned & deteriorated until President Woodrow Wilson dedicated the lighthouse & ½ acre of land as Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo National Monument. in 1935 the lighthouse received a major restoration & a statue of Cabrillo donated by Portugal near the lighthouse. Today the lighthouse is no longer in service but stands as a landmark & museum. The original Point Loma Lighthouse Hill Lighthouse, San Diego CA.
