A Note to all those dextrous souls who devote themselves to giving life to small exotic houseplants: l am just about mesmerized by the Color & exquisite forms l see , for instance, among the Coleus on Etsy. Fantastic. Or the bizarre permutations of the Euphorbia. & l really love the Lithops. You cannot ever leave out the prima dona Orchids, nor the elegant African Violet. The rainbow dreams of Hollywood can never compare with the productions of these mad horticulturalists in their secret greenhouse laboratories. There is a distinct border between my established imagery & treatments & the constant nudging of that border into the outback of my imagination. Like any normal artist l love to break brush, to leave the cultivated fields that are the accumulated territory of half a centurys' residence in a craft & to push through the bracken & nettles of the surrounding country. & when l am done l love to return to my little patch of well-plowed fields & hearth to pursue my settled calling. This piece is a little off the path. Always when l leave the back fourty l am watching for new ground to clear, though often enough l might never return to that point.
