Passionately handcarved by Richard Banda, a man with a natural flair in carving stone. With over 14 years experience of carving stone & a family line of stone artists, Richard is a master of his trade. This abstract statue is made from Springstone. Weighs approximately 12kgs & measures 32cm in height. Because springstone is frost resistant, it is also ideal for outdoor display even in temperate climates. Springstone is an exceptionally hard, dark serpentinite stone used in Shona sculpture. Due to its density, it can be polished to a high shine. Zimbabwe is rich in a variety of stones including serpentine, butter jade, verdite, leopard rock, cobalt springstone etc. This expressive form of art has grown in leaps & bounds since 1980. Initially introduced around 1956 by Frank McEwen who was then the Director of The National Gallery of Rhodesia a lot of progress has been made in Zimbabwe. Despite the challenges faced in the country this beautiful art has seen the artistically talented men, perfect the art & also able to support their families by playing with stone & producing masterpieces.
