He does all this while romancing a former lover who's now married to an unscrupulous plantation owner. "Hard Day's Night" Director Richard Lester brings us a sprawling romantic adventure that captures the atmosphere & lunacy of the last days of the Batista regime perfectly. This is a brilliant visual satire of a society so materialistic it is spiraling toward a total collapse. The Cinematography is extraordinary & although shot in Spain, Lester's Cuba displays extraordinary attention to detail that's dazzling yet still coherent stylistically. There's something inventive & engaging going on just around the edges of this picture. The supporting cast shines as a tapestry of minor characters brings the period alive. The assembled cast is flawless & includes Jack Weston, Hector Elizondo, Martin Balsam, Chris Sarandon, & Denholm Elliott. CUBA impressively details what the last days of a politically corrupt regime look like as society goes into freefall & opportunists scour the old government for scapes. Connery is terrific in the lead role making the flaws of his Gable-like hero humorous & deeply affecting.
