This Medicine Buddha is in the Chiang Saen or Lanna style. The Chiang Saen or Lanna style (between 11th & 18th centuries A.D.) was influenced by the styles of the Khmer, Sukhothai, India, Burma & Sri Lanka. The first thing one sees about this style is the orb shaped finial which looks like a lotus bud on the top of the head of the Buddha. The face is round & smiling, with high curving highbrows, a hooked nose & mostly narrow lips. The eyes are down cast as if in meditation. The Buddha has a wealth of curls on his head which look like snail shells. His earlobes are stretched. The Buddha sits peacefully with his left hand resting in his lap in a pose of mediation with a small alms bowl. His right hand extends over the right thigh, near the knee, with the fingers pointing towards the ground in earth touching mudra holding a healing sprig of chebulic Myrobalan in it. The Medicine Buddha is considered the Master of Healing in Tibetan medicine. Tibetan medicine recognizes three types of illnesses that are caused by passion, aggression & ignorance.
