Description
A gargoyle is a grotesque statue usually carved out of stone. They are usually based on animals or people My Small Gargoyle looks to be based on some kind of cat. I can't really tell if it's an angry house cat, a lion or some other big cat. I reproduced & adapted my gargoyle pendant from a turn of the last century European button. It is about 5/8 of an inch from the tip of his ears to the bottom of his chin & about 11/16 of an inch at its widest. I made it using the lost wax casting process. All my pendants come with an adjustable black silky cord. My solid sterling silver gargoyle is shown, but I also make them in solid bronze. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Etruscans, & Romans all made gargoyles. Medieval Europeans loved gargoyles & carved them on many of their cathedrals. Some say they believed that the gargoyles would protect the cathedrals or frighten evil spirits away from them. Others believe the gargoyles were meant to scare the congregations into good behavior with hellish visions of the afterlife.
