Welcome to Pioneer Fossils! Here is a beautiful specimen of Martite, a rare find in Twin Peaks Prospect, Twin Peaks, near Kanosh, Millard County, Utah. From an old collection. Martite is a hematite pseudomorph after magnetite. This means Hematite has replaced magnetite, under depth & pressure so the shape of the magnetite is retained. Martite has a number of crystals with octahedral & partial octahedral shapes (like having a pyramid on top of an upside-down pyramid). Some of the crystals are quite shiny. The specimen is about 30 mm. at the longest length, & it weighs 23 grams. A nice & rare addition to a mineral collection.
