Vintage Original TODAY Florida's Space Age Newspaper January 27 1967 Apollo 1 Fire On January 27, 1967, a terrible thing happened the Apollo program when a flash fire happened in the command module 012 during a launch pad test of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle being prepared for the first piloted flight, the AS-204 mission. Three space travelers, Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom, of Mercury & Gemini missions; Lt. Col. Edward H. White, the space traveler who had completed the first United States, outside of a vehicle, activity during the Gemini program; & Roger B. Chaffee, a space traveler preparing for his first space flight, died in this very sad, sudden horrifying event. This Today paper was published in Brevard County, Florida. We have searched & searched for another original paper. Great vintage, original condition. My father, Dr. Martin L. Charles, was the Assistant Medical Director & Chief Doctor at Cape Kennedy Space Center 1964-1967. At that point he was also directing the medical program for Pan American Guided Missile Range Division at the Cape including medical surveillance of the Space travelers at Cape Kennedy & all down range facilities & personal. He was one of the doctors on call that incredibly traumatic day & was told to report to the Cape right away. All our NASA, Pan American & Space Exploration items are from that timeline. All pieces in our collection are original. Please see the photos to complete the description. Thanks so much for checking out our Etsy Shop.
