Clover & other legumes take part in nitrogen "fixation." This is why farmers often rotate soybeans that replenish the soil with nitrogen & crops like corn that strip it of nitrogen. White & Red clover are the species that can occasionally produce a "lucky" four-leaf clover. These species were brought to the US from Eurasia for use as animal feed & cover crop. While they are non-native, they are generally considered non-invasive/non-aggressive. White & Yellow Sweet Clover were also introduced to the US from Eurasia for the same purpose, but these species are aggressive. They invade prairies & natural habitats, taking resources from native plant species. Native clover species in our area (including Purple & White Prairie Clover & Round Headed Bush Cover) offer the greatest benefits to native wildlife.
