Description

Two unissued Civil War sutler script notes printed for "S. Rightmyre, Sutler, of 109th N. York Regiment". During the Civil War, some regiments both North & South had sutlers where the soldiers could purchase personal supplies. The soldier would receive goods signing the paper for the amount taken. The sutler would take these on "payday" to the commanding officer & receive payment. These were printed on full sheets & cut up as needed; sometimes extras were used for other things. There were originally three notes (only two remain) which someone used to write out a recipe for "Knicherbocker pickle for hams" on the back. I'm not sure if it was done during the War or after. He may have taken the extras home where his wife used them. I'm selling them as a pair. The 109th New York Infantry Regiment was nicknamed the Binghamton Regiment. They were mustered in on August 27, 1862 & mustered out mustered out June 4, 1865. It left New York on August 30, 1862, to serve as a guard to the Washington, D.C. railroads in Annapolis Junction, & Laurel, Maryland. On May 4, 1864, the 109th New York served in Virginia. They fought in the Overland Campaign leading up to the Siege of Petersburg, including the battles of The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, & Cold Harbor. Priced for the pair. The notes will be shipped in a protective sleeve with a dated, hand signed Letter of Authenticity with a photograph of the currency above. All of the artifacts on our site are guaranteed to be original Civil War issue or as stated. Please see our "About Collectors Frame", below the reviews on the front page, for more information on the framing & artifacts. e3507 109Th New York Infantry - Sutler Script Obsolete Currency Emergency
