This 1990 wood carving hails from Uruguay & features the bust of an indigenous man with traditional hat of the style worn by men & women alike, especially those who work on the South American ranges. The carving possibly represents one of the indigenous cultures that existed prior to the 1500s, & it could be the Guaraní, which is the one remaining people who survived diseases & colonization that occurred through the 1800s. I rarely find folk art from Uruguay, & so it is a great treat to find this well-rendered hand-carved wood sculpture. Measures about 6" tall by about 3" wide by 4-1/4" deep. Bottom of base has hard-to-read writing yet I can make out the word URUGUAY & the year 1990. in good vintage condition. Not a large piece yet great presence.
