World War II loomed as the 1939-1940 "World of Tomorrow" New York World's Fair opened. Centerpieces of the fair were the Trylon, a 728 foot tapering column, & the Perisphere, a huge globe. The fair, held in Flushing Meadow Park in Queens, boasted more than two million flowers & 10,000 trees on the site of an original dump. Among the "World of Tomorrow" previews were air conditioning, television, nylon & General Motor's "Futurama", a prediction of auto freeway systems which reportedly drew 28,000 visitors daily.
