The first version of the event was founded in 1985 by a community-based Asian American media production company & advocacy group called KingStreet Media. The event went on hiatus for several years until it was revived in 1994 by Emily Wong & William Satake Blauvelt. From 1994 to 1998, the SAAFF became the known as the premiere Asian American film festival in the country.
