Description

Eremnophila aureonotata & prey Female Eremnophila aureonotata & her prize, a Raphia frater (the caterpillar of a moth called "the brother"). E. aureonotata are ammophilines & hunt caterpillars (mostly noctuids & notodontids) that they paralyze & then run all along the ground with, holding them parallel to their bodies. They'll dig a burrow, lay an egg on the caterpillar, cover the burrow, & repeat. As adults these wasps are common nectar feeders, & can often be found flying from flower to flower in meadows & scrub land, preferring areas with slightly sandier soils in which to dig their nests. This particular species can often be found with multiple males attached to the female with their jaws, attempting to be the one to mate with her.
