He found the native people to be suffering from poverty, hunger, & disease. He began a medical mission there & set up a cottage industry making hooked mats, rugs, & handicrafts. This helped alleviate the poor conditions. Silk stockings were sent to the mission from all over to be dyed & used in the making of these rugs. The mats are flawlessly hooked & are highly collectible. Every hole in the burlap was used with the hooking needle, creating the tiny stitches for which the rugs are famous. The Grenfell rugs are true Folk Art. Grenfell Hand Hooked Mat, Flying Goose Over A Pond, Silk Stockings Material, Labrador Industries Label, C. 1930 #19067
