Description

ANRI Wood Carving 'The Poor Boy' On an average, it takes about three months to create an ANRI figure. The process begins with the purchase of 80 year old maple trees from plantations in France. Only the best & healthiest trees are selected & only about 20% of these meet the ANRI standards. These logs are air dried for up to 3 years & then cut into blocks which are kiln dried to reduce moisture to 10%. It is from this stock that the wood is sized for figures & placed in storage. Artists create original prototypes from the designs that are selected to become ANRI figures. From these prototypes special models are prepared so that each figure can be accurately duplicated. As this process is taking place, blocks of wood are roughly shaped to meet the requirements of that particular figure. Then the special model is worked by hand to duplicate its form. From that stage the figure is inspected & if approved goes into the hand finishing sculpture studio where details are completed. After each figure goes through a process of sealing the wood, it travels to the hand painting studio. Here the painters carefully detail each figure with transparent oil paints so that the wood grain remains visible. After drying, each figure is again inspected & the ANRI seal is applied. Designed by the artist Juan Ferrandiz, a painter who wrote poetry & a poet who painted pictures. He received his artistic education at the "Reial Académia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi" in Barcelona, later became himself an art professor & devoted himself to the design of figures based on his particular predilection for childish themes. His collaboration with ANRI allowed the ANRI Master carvers to bring many of his designs to life. Juan Ferrándiz passed away in August 1997, at the age of 79. This lovely sculpture was carved from a single block of wood. Every single cut was worked by hand & every detail carefully hand brushed with special transparent oil based colors so that the beauty of the wood grain remains visible. 3" Scale (7.5 cm). The underside is marked with a Ferrandiz facsimile signature & blind stamped "©ANRI Italy."
