Description

Illustration of the seminal Ukrainian short story writer & novelist, Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852.) Born to minor Ukrainian gentry of Cossack ancestry, he moved to Saint Petersburg as a young man & met with immediate success upon the publication of his short stories about his homeland. Befriended by Puskin & other luminaries of the Russian literati, Gogol fully adopted a career in letters following the triumph of his satirical play, 'The Government Inspector,' staged under permission of the Czar. He would continue to pen many of the most influential short stories in the Russian language, 'The Overcoat' & 'The Nose', as well as the novel, 'Dead Souls,' largely while living abroad. Returning to Russia following a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Gogol's health faltered after adopting extreme ascetic practices. Partly inspired by his spiritual advisor to see his work as sinful, Gogol burned his manuscripts in a bonfire (which he soon regretted) & died of self-enforced starvation nine days later, at the age of 42. Portrait modeled after his daguerreotype. Museum-quality posters made on thick & durable matte paper. Paper thickness: 10.3 mil Paper weight: 5.57 oz/y² (189 g/m²) Giclée printing quality Opacity: 94% ISO brightness: 104% Nikolai Gogol - Author Poster | Literary Writer Gift Teacher Russian Literature Classroom Decor Modern Home
