Description

This listing is for one large medallion pendant made in bronze depicting a scene from Roman mythology: Tithonus changed to a grasshopper (by Aurora). Aurora, goddess of the Dawn. in Roman mythology, Aurora, goddess of the dawn, renews herself every morning & flies across the sky, announcing the arrival of the sun. Aurora, the goddess of the Dawn, like her sister the Moon, was at times inspired with the love of mortals. Her greatest favorite was Tithonus, son of Laomedon, king of Troy. She stole him away, & prevailed on Jupiter to grant him immortality; but forgetting to have youth joined in the gift, after some time she began to discern, to her great mortification, that he was growing old. When his hair was quite white she left his society; but he still had the range of her palace, lived on ambrosial food, & was clad in celestial raiment. At length he lost the power of using his limbs, & then she shut him up in his chamber, whence his feeble voice might at times be heard. Finally she turned him into a grasshopper. Note: This listing is for one bronze medallion the medallion pendant measures about 32x41mm The pendant is made from an antique genuine John Tyrrell plaster intaglio that dates back to the first half of the 1800's. The medallion necklace has been made by hand using number 289 in the John Tyrrell plaster intaglio collection. John Tyrrell bought Prince Poniatowskis neo-classical Grand Tour intaglio gems in the 1839 Christie's Auction House sale. He made plaster impressions of them & published a catalogue of the lot in 1841, republished in 1857 with photographs of them. John Tyrrell thought the gems were very old antiques from gem engraving masters such as Gnaios, Dioscorides & Apollonides... They were really 18th Century fakes of the highest quality, & would later unravel as a huge Prince Poniatowski scandal. Please note that the medallion pendant has been through a oxidization process to give it a antique, vintage patina. The antique plaster cameo has been pressed into bronze by hand, & this makes each & every pendant unique. The medallion you will receive is similar to the ones in the pictures. Helpful hints: Some of the images (above) of the pendants have been photographed close-up. If you have a hard time imagining the size of the pendant, then it can be helpful to physically draw the dimensions of it on a piece of paper. You can type in the words "mm to in" into Google's search box, that will give you a quick converter if you prefer the dimensions measured in inches.
