Description

This Greek pottery, Lekythos Vase is a fine museum replica totally handmade with the white ground technique. The painting represents two ancient Greek women, the one holding an Exaliptron & the other one holding a basket with wishes. in ancient Greek pottery, Lekythos vase, plural Lekythoi, was an oil vessel with a long cylindrical body & a thin neck with a handle. It was used in baths & gymnasiums as well as for burial gifts. The name appears to have been used by the ancient Athenians to refer to any tiny oil flask. Around 590 BCE, the lekythos appeared, adorned in the black-figure method. The red-figure technique was sporadically utilized from approximately 530 BCE, but until about 480 BCE, the majority of lekythoi were still adorned in black-figure. Then around 440 BCE, emerged a new method in which lekythoi were painted with a white basis & figurative scenes. This style is well-known in a huge number of places. Because the white ground paint was brittle & not suitable for heavy usage, a great number of this style are documented, mostly from Athenian cemeteries. Totally glazed black lekythoi & red figure ones remained the most durable forms for regular usage.
