Vintage Compact Harriet Hubbard Ayer Vintage in Original Box Gifts Holiday Christmas Gift This fabulous vintage compact has a chic plaid printed cover & is signed Harriet Hubbard Ayer! Made of very shiny gold tone metal, there is a snazzy printed black & white plaid pattern on the cover. There is a push button clasp that when opened reveals a mirror in the cover & a shiny gold tone covered well for powder. Embossed into the powder well cover is the Harriet Hubbard Ayer signature logo. This piece is unused & sold in its original box, very clean! Measures 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" x 1/2". This compact has never been used & is in very good vintage condition. The original box is a plain white card board box that does have some age spots & scuffs as show however it did a great job protecting the compact which only shows very minimal wear in the way of a few light surface scratches. Harriet Hubbard Ayer was a Chicago socialite. She became famous for having initiated the first cosmetic company in the United States & for fighting to maintain her business against male predators. She set the stage for later female cosmetic moguls. Ayer was a victim of kidnapping & also suffered from madness, but was able to reinvent herself during the last seven years of her life as the highest paid newspaper woman in the United States. She was highly regarded as the author of articles about beauty, health, & etiquette for Joseph Pulitzer's New York World. Her essays were compiled into a popular book in 1899 that was reissued in 1974 & more recently in an abbreviated format in 2005. Elizabeth Arden, Hazel Bishop, & Estee Lauder are held in high regard as early women entrepreneurs in the cosmetics field, Harriet Hubbard Ayer was one of the first to have a successful career in the beauty industry.
