Utterly cool concretionary fossil of a scallop, Aviculopecten mazonensis, whose form was captured for all time, as stone formed around & through its shell. You get the two pieces of this micro-detailed specimen which contain the fossil. A third piece was not fossiliferous & is not present. There are also areas of shiny sphalerite in the fossil, as well as minor pyrite. From the world-famous Mazon Creek fossil beds, Illinois (Braidwood). Fossil measures 1.5 x 1.4 x .75 inches as a partially intact concretion.
