Size: approximately 3/4 inch Material: Sterling silver This beautiful medal from France shows St Bridget of Sweden dressed in her Brigittine habit writing in a book. The engraving, Sainte Brigitte, is the French spelling of Saint Bridget. St Bridget was born in 1302 & raised by a wealthy Christian family in Sweden. She married a nobleman at age 13 & went on to have 8 children. She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Blanche & used her position to counsel the queen & King Magnus to be guided by Christ in their positions. After her husband died she became a religious & received many visions, her most famous one being a vision of the birth of Christ. She was ridiculed & isolated for deciding to leave her position at court but pursued her dream of being a nun & eventually founded the Bridgettine Order in 1346. She went on pilgrimage to Rome & stayed there to council Popes Clement VI, Gregory XI, & Urban VI. She died in Rome in 1374 & was buried at her convent in Sweden. St Bridget is the patron of widows. The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty & history of the original piece.
