Illustration of French novelist & statesman, André Malraux (1901-1976.) Malraux was an active participant in the artistic & literary Parisian scene as a teenager, but, inspired by the example of T.E. Lawrence, ventured out to French Indochina as an archaeologist in 1923. His experiences in the French Protectorate lead him to become a strident anti-colonialist & resulted in the publication of two popular novels, 'The Royal Way' & 'Man's Fate.' He later joined the Spanish Republicans in their civil war against the fascists, which inspired his novel 'Man's Hope.' During the Second World War, he was an active member of the French Army & later Resistance, although the manuscript of his last novel was burned by the Gestapo. in the post-war years, he became a minister of various departments under Charles de Gaulle & a widely respected art theorist.
