Illustration of the inimitable English philosopher, political activist & Nobel Laureate Bertrand Russell, 3rd Earl Russell (1872-1970.) One of the founders of analytic philosophy, Earl Russel was born to a liberal aristocratic family. Orphaned at a young age, he & his sibling were raised, primarily, by his paternal grandmother following the subsequent passing of the 1st Earl Russel, a former Prime Minister. As an adolescent, he fell in love with mathematics & the poetry of Shelly, & won a scholarship to read for the Mathematical Tripos at Trinity College, Cambridge. He would go on to advance the philosophy of logic & mathematics with his foundational publications 'The Principles of Mathematics' & 'Principia Mathematica,' the latter written in company with Alfred North Whitehead. He was also a major figure in British public intellectual life as a proponent of anti-imperialism, freedom of speech, contraception, atheism, & nuclear de-armament & was jailed for opposing the First World War.
